Frequently Asked Questions

Raw Dog Food

K
L
Why is raw dog food better for my dog's teeth?

Not only does chewing meaty bones help keep the teeth clean and strengthen the jaw, but raw dog food also contains enzymes that can help protect the dog's teeth and gums.

K
L
What are common food allergy symptoms in dogs?

The usual signs are itchy skin/paws/ears. Digestion issues may also be a result of a food allergy.

How do I transition my dog to a raw food diet?

Transitioning a dog from a processed diet onto a raw one is not a quick process, and the dog should never just be instantly changed over. Dogs require a gradual transition process to allow their stomach pH, intestinal microbiome, and digestive enzyme release to adapt.

A gradual transition is also very important because a quick transition can lead to digestive upset and diarrhea.

When doing a transition from one diet to another, the commonly used technique is to mix them in the same bowl more and more over time. However, some would advise that this is not an ideal method for transitioning from processed to raw feeding. A different suggestion for raw transitioning is to feed the processed diet for one meal and then the raw ration for the next, alternating at each meal. This alternating method should be done over a minimum of seven days, increasing the raw and decreasing the processed food until the diet is completely raw. Read More here..

Can dogs eat raw eggs?

When your dog is used to raw dog food, it will digest the eggs without problems. Eggs are rich in nutrients and can promote stronger bones and skin health.

K
L
How much raw dog food should I feed?

The general rule of thumb is to feed 2% of the dog's daily weight in raw food/bones/organs. In the first 2 years of their life, puppies should receive around 4% of their expected weight when fully grown. Every breed is different, though; some breeds have a higher demand than others. Please get in touch, and we help you to set up a feeding plan.

K
L
Is it normal that my dog is drinking less water on the raw diet?

Yes, especially when your dog transitioned from kibble to a raw food diet, you will see that your dog drinks less. While feeding on raw meat products, the moisture intake increases. So, your dog only needs a little water to stay hydrated.

K
L
What is bone broth?

Bone broth is a liquid made from boiling animal bones and connective tissue. It contains many essential nutrients that can boost your dog's immune system's ability to fight hypersensitive reactions and diseases. We use it often when our dog is not feeling too good to promote his health.

K
L
Can I feed my dog table scraps?

A raw food diet means raw food. Table scraps are usually cooked, and we do not recommend them.

K
L
Can I feed my dog raw fish?

Absolutely! Raw fish is an important part of a raw diet. It supports the immune system and may decrease inflammation. It is high in omega-3 and protein.

K
L
Can I give my dog vegetables or fruits?

Yes, you can feed your dog vegetables and fruits in moderation, but not all are recommended.

Please see the list below.

Safe fruits and veggie sare: carrots, broccoli, brussel sprouts, celery, green beans, peas, apples, pears, watermelon, bananas, blueberries, cranberries, strawberries

Fruits and veggies that are NOT safe:

Cherries, grapes, leeks, lemon, lime, mushrooms, plums, potatoes, tomatoes, rhubarb

K
L
Can I still give my dog treats?

Yes, absolutely. What would a life be without treats?

We recommend freeze-dried organs or mussels.

In summer, some frozen water lemon or frozen berries are great to cool your puppy down. (Tip: freeze some smashed watermelon and goat milk, spread it on a slow feed mat, and then freeze it. It's a great treat and keeps your dog busy and cools him down in summer)

Does your raw meat contain medicines, antibiotics or nutritional supplements?

None of our suppliers use meat from animals treated with antibiotics. All the meat is ethically sourced.

How should I store my dog's raw pet food?

Your frozen meat should always be stored in the freezer right after delivery. It will prevent bacteria from growing and ensure your dog's food remains safe to thaw, spoon and serve. The temperature of a household freezer is sufficient for this.

Defrost items only when used within the next 48 hours and keep them in the fridge.

Other storing tips:

  • Keep the raw pet food away from human food
  • Use stainless steel when preparing the raw food (no wooden spoons or similar).
  • Wash the surface or cutting board used after preparing the meal.

Other treats like deer ears, pig snouts, etc., don't have to be frozen but should be packed in bags or containers.

It's not as complicated as it may sound; common sense will prevent most mistakes. Your dog will appreciate it. If you have any concerns, please get in touch

How should I store my dog's Goat Milk?

Goat milk and Kefir should be used within a week after defrosting. A great tip is to unfreeze it, pour it into little ice cube forms and transfer them back to the freezer. This is great for treats and cooling your furry friend on those hot days.

What is the connection between raw nutrition and dental health in pets?

Discovering the link between raw nutrition and dental health in pets is fascinating! The sugar content is significantly lower when comparing raw meat diets to processed ones due to reduced carbohydrates. This, in turn, helps minimize bacterial build-up in their mouths, paving the way for improved dental health overall.

But here's the interesting part: chewing raw meat and raw meaty bones is vital in maintaining dogs' dental well-being. Recent studies highlight the significant impact of appropriately sized bones in reducing calculus coverage on their teeth.

While some argue that dry kibble diets can serve a similar purpose, it's important to note that crumbling kibble offers a different mechanical cleaning function. So, it's clear that exploring the benefits of raw nutrition for your pet's dental health is worth considering!

Can my dog get salmonella from raw meat?

Salmonella is not something to be trifled with. Please always ensure that after receiving your (frozen) products, you put them straight into the freezer unless you feed them in the next 2 days.

Also, when defrosting portions in a container, always clean the container thoroughly after use. Same with e.g. cutting boards.

When cutting duck or chicken frames or any pieces of raw meat, always clean your cutting board and the materials you have used.

Is the raw food you sell ethically sourced?

When we do our groceries and buy meat, we only buy grass-fed, free-range, etc. It is important to us where our food comes from. And we would always make the same conscious decision when choosing Monty’s food.

The products we offer at Raw and More are all ethically sourced. This means all meat is sourced from responsible, sustainable and ethical farms. The animals never received antibiotics, artificial additives or sedatives and were fed ethically. The whole animal gets processed; therefore, as many parts of it as possible are used to minimize waste.
